Getaway trip

Brian’s parents offered to watch our oldest four children for a week so we decided to enjoy some time away by ourselves….plus Iris.

pics 037

We went to a friend’s lake house for two nights.  Iris saw the menu and decided to forage a bit while we unloaded the car.

pics 043

We ate dinner outside and I found the biggest “hopper” I’ve ever seen! This definitely takes foraging to a new level. We decided to take it home to show the kids.

pics 049

We took a nice evening boat ride around the lake. A trolling motor is a fantastic addition to a paddle boat – quieter and much faster.

pics 050

Iris quickly got tired of the constraints of a life jacket and forgot to enjoy the sunset.

pics 056

Back on the dock it took a while for us to come back into her good graces. We played backgammon while she recovered herself.

pics 041

That evening Iris surprised us with her new ability – pulling up to a stand! She is so proud of herself.

pics 060

After an early morning swim in the lake we had a good breakfast and took off on a 10 mile bike ride.

pics 079

Brian liked the name of this realty company.

pics 063

After another nice swim we were hungry! I whipped up some grub, we ate and then everyone took a nap.

pics 067

Played Upwords (I won) while we ate supper. Iris enjoyed score keeping for a while then wanted a new challenge.

pics 068

We had enjoyed some watermelon with our dinner so I put her in the ice chest to contain the mess and let her chomp away.

Brian put her in the sink for cleanup. She was one happy baby!

pics 078

We had popcorn and watched a movie that evening while Iris played and climbed all over us and the couch.

pics 039

Our final morning we enjoyed another early swim, breakfast and a shorted bike ride. Then we cleaned the cabin before leaving. Brian got to try out a water vacuum and did a good job tidying the place up.  We had a nice relaxing time of no schedule and minimal responsibility. Great to just be together and play for a bit. Thank you so much to my in-laws for the childcare and Katie for the animal care!

How does your garden grow?

Very well! Thanks to the crew of A&M students that helped us clear the grass, Brian’s hard work in tilling the plot and plenty of rain,  sunshine and mulch.pics 130

This is the view from one end of the garden – mostly tomatoes and flowers.pics 131

This side shows the corn crop which we have just finished harvesting! The metal panels around the edge help control the Bermuda grass – a tenacious weed. Watermelon is growing all among the corn rows.

pics 135

This view is the back side of the garden where our cucumber vines are climbing. On the extreme right edge you can see little okra plants. Something ate the upper leaves on our cucumbers so we tied the dog nearby for several nights and managed to deter our visitor.

pics 127

We have gigantic tomato bushes that are a good foot taller than me!

 pics 136

The Zinnias have put forth probably a hundred blooms – so pretty! It’s nice to have them on hand to cut and take to people that need their day brightened.

pics 143

The corn harvest was particularly fun. I wish I had a picture of the day they picked 20 cucumbers – they were so excited! It’s almost like a treasure hunt searching among the leaves.pics 133

Even Iris enjoys working in the garden – she sampled most of the vegetation 🙂

pics 190

And the best part was the corn shucking party! This was a particular  favorite for the two year olds – they were intensely occupied for at least 20 minutes straight while I canned some pickles!

pics 200

They are so fun and pretty in the jars! Now to process the corn!

And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon, and establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17

Growing and learning!

pics 004

Little Iris is growing fast!

pics 145

She is surrounded by plenty of stimulation – thanks to her four older siblings.

pics 006

About 3 months old, Iris plays with a friend during our co-op.

pics 084

Enjoying a family outing.

pics 047

At five months she was learning to sit….

pics 078

…mastering the skill in time to enjoy the wading pool!

pics 055

A strong baby, she moved quickly towards mobility. She particularly loves to push this around in the garage while the big kids ride bikes all around her.

Iris just turned 6 months and crawling is almost here.

pics 022

The big kid toys are now fair game…though all that activity makes one tired.

We love this happy baby, full of laughter, smiles and interest in life.

Easter Path

This is an Easter activity we did at a church in Dallas. My sisters helped me recreate it at our house to help teach the children the Easter story. Enjoy!

And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and threw them in the way. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.            Mark 11:7-9

IMG_3712

After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him….When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. John 13:5, 12-15

IMG_3728

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:26-28

IMG_3739

Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed. Luke 22:39-41

IMG_3748

(holding ice and watching an animation of the crucifixion)

God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus….

IMG_3751

…Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.  Romans 3:25-28

IMG_3756

For He has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

IMG_3757

So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mark 15:46

The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. Luke 23:55-56

IMG_3763

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb…but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus….He is not here; he has risen! Luke 24:1,3,6

IMG_3773

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

IMG_3777

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17
